Let's come to the story! A slum born and brought up hero wins money in a contest, becomes darling of masses and wins his heartthrob! How does he do and that’s the silver screen stuff!
The heroin introduction is the turning point in the story! Till such point of time, the hero's life was "as usual". With the heroine introduction, the story picks up in top gear. The heroin's hand bag was snatched by a local thug; our hero (yes, a slum born and brought up character well played by eight pack Dhanush; a life time character for Dhanush as claimed by him) chases, fought with the gang of the thug and retrieved the hand bag to the heroin. The formula love blossoms there for the heroine with the hero. There comes the song "en thookkam tholaiththavane" scored by Deva, the picturisation was done in Australia and Sydney in around 10 locations with lot of difficulty and permissions. The heroin though a new comer has done justice to the role. Amidst lots of duets and "fights for the sake of society", the hero hits an opportunity to sing a song in a contest; this is a world famous contest musician all over the world participates. The prize worth is many crores of rupees. Our hero though not money minded decided to participate, for the sake of medical expenses of one of the slum born baby, to build a school in the slum and for the educational expenses of all the slum children. Though he does not know the grammar and nitty-gritty of music, the cause makes him work towards it. Amazingly, in a period of 30 days, through day and night "sadhakam" he masters the art of music, all forms of music, carnatic, western, folk, jazz, Zulu, radif, etc. The director made his touch by showing all the musical instruments in one song and thus made the audience understand the magic hero miracle of mastering all forms of music in a month! Even there is a scene where, the hero gets the blessings in the form of a garland falling from the photograph of Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyengar.
Just a day before the much awaited D-day, fearing failure, another musician (villain role played by Prakash raj, well done Chellam) kidnapped the heroin and the slum children. The ransom? Our hero's withdrawal from the contest and persuade the slum dwellers to sell the slum land to another villain dhadha (played by the wonderful Nasar). Dhanush's acting in that scene was really great! Sealing his face with his hands, he showed all the expressions of frustration, helplessness, anger and sadness!
Dhanush fought through all the ordeals with his slender build and rescued the captives. He finishes the fight and runs around 100 kms to the venue of the competition and enters in to the stage when his name was called out, sings a song remembering his lost mother with a strong folk flavor "ennai petha aathave, unnoda rasa nandhane". While finishing the song, hero's throat stuck and there was a voice from the crowd, an old woman continues the song in her sweet voice. What an emotional drama it was.... The woman is none other than the mother of Dhanush. A role played by Kushboo in a seamless manner. Both of them finish the song by singing the pallavi, Kudos to the Director for intelligently using the song for the flash back and to unite the mother & son !
As expected Dhanush won the award for the emotions he brought out in the son. Though he has become crorepathi, he returns back to the slum for theri service. The song worth mentioning in his slum come back is "engal cheri thangam then pandi chingam" a kuthup pattu number. surely it s going to be the anthem of our college guys.
Though the story line is an adaptation of slum dog millionaire, the screen play definitely retained the tamil film originality and flavour !
